To begin, a presentation of the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental (CRD) of Châteauroux: at the CRD, students learn classical to contemporary music, dance, and theater. The conservatory also has a department dedicated to traditional Berrichon music (hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and traditional singing). The municipal music ensemble of Châteauroux, in connection with the CRD's collective practices, offers a wind orchestra and a brass band conducted by Mariana Garciagodoy Cervantes and Ludovic Rabier. Similarly, the A Tempo association works year-round with a symphony orchestra called Opus 36, directed by the conservatory's director, Patrice Pinero. The charming Musée Bertrand, housed in an 18th-century mansion, presents collections of fine arts and decorative arts from the 16th to 19th centuries. A notable discovery is the work of Berry sculptor Ernest Nivet, a farmer's son who became a student of Rodin. The highlight is a monumental work by Camille Claudel, gifted by the sculptress to the city of Châteauroux in 1895. This piece, over 2 meters tall, was considered immoral at the time of its donation and spent over a century in storage. Today, it's one of the masterpieces of the Musée Bertrand.
For cinema, head to the Apollo, the art house cinema we've all dreamed of. The Mach 36 is a large venue covering 5,200 square meters and can accommodate up to 5,000 people, hosting major concerts, film concerts, and stand-up comedy.
Châteauroux also boasts numerous festivals throughout the year, including the DARC International Stage-Festival, a dance workshop culminating in a grand dance evening and a series of public concerts attracting over 65,000 people to Châteauroux each August.
For book lovers, "L'Envolée des livres" takes place every May at the Cordeliers, a former convent that now hosts contemporary art exhibitions. This cool book fair allows you to meet literary and comic book stars, as well as Châteauroux's best booksellers: Librairix, a specialized comic book store, and Librairie Arcanes, an independent bookstore with an excellent fine arts section.
